Building Transition Readiness Through Athlete Wellbeing

Australian Athletics embeds transition within a dedicated wellbeing function that sits alongside its performance and talent pathway programmes. Rather than treating transition as a retirement issue, the organisation positions it as a normal part of athlete development.
Athletes receive support through recognised change points, including progression through pathways, injury, deselection,
coaching changes and retirement. By introducing support early and revisiting it over time, the organisation aims to help athletes build confidence and resilience before major transitions occur.
Dedicated wellbeing staff work within the performance environment, helping normalise support-seeking behaviours and ensuring athletes can access guidance throughout their journey.
